Download Year 1 Maths worksheets introduce pupils to fractions. The focus is on developing a conceptual understanding of what a fraction means this is mainly explored by comparing fractions to simple shapes that have been divided into equal parts.

Equal parts’ activities for Year 1
The concept of ‘equal parts’ is essential, as fractions can only be used to represent shapes that are divided into equal parts. In these Year 1 fractions worksheets, pupils identify shapes that have been divided equally and draw lines to split shapes into 2 or 4 equal parts. Fractions always represent parts that are the same size.
Fractions Writing Worksheets
These worksheets introduce fractions and their notation. Pupils match shapes divided into equal parts with their corresponding written fractions. They also match simple fractions written in symbols (e.g. “1/3”) with the same fractions written in words (e.g. “one third”). Pupils should be encouraged to say “one third” rather than “one over three” whenever possible.
In some activities, pupils colour shapes to show the given fractions. The shapes are already divided into equal parts, so the focus is on understanding the meaning of the numerator and denominator. Pupils also write fractions to represent the shaded parts of shapes, filling in the missing numerator, denominator, or both. Denominators of 2, 4, 5, 6, 8, and 12 are used.
These worksheets also introduce fractions as a way to describe parts of a set or group of identical objects. Pupils write fractions in response to questions about the pictured sets.
