The 2015 phonics screening check is a statutory assessment administered to all Year 1 pupils in England in June 2015. It was designed to measure each child's phonics decoding ability and confirm whether they had reached the expected standard.
Schools had the freedom to choose a day within the week commencing 15th June 2015. Because some schools are larger than others, the test could take place on one day or spread across several days.
The 2015 phonics screening check was given to all children in Year 1 in England. Additionally, children who did not meet the expected standard in the 2014 phonics screening check (when they were in Year 1) were required to retake it in Year 2.
The threshold mark for phonics screening check was 32 marks out of 40. Children who scored 32 or more were considered to have met the expected standard, while those who scored below 32 had not.
The 2015 phonics screening check materials include the pupils' booklet, an answer sheet, scoring guidance, and a practice sheet. All materials were prepared and published by the Standards and Testing Agency (STA).
The phonics screening check is a quick and easy check of a child's phonic knowledge. It helps teachers confirm whether a child has reached the expected standard and to plan the next steps for their future learning. It is conducted one-to-one between the child and their teacher.
